"That stack of chips in front of you might look good next to mine," I said.
Jax let out a short, derisive laugh. "Still as cocky as ever, I see."
I leaned back in my chair, regarding her coolly. "I prefer 'confident.' But I can understand why you'd confuse the two."
Jax's eyes narrowed slightly. Good—I'd gotten under her skin. The dealer finished shuffling and began dealing the cards. I kept my expression neutral as I assessed my hand. Not great, but workable.
"So what's your plan?" Jax asked, rearranging her hole cards. "Bat your eyelashes and hope some fool goes easy on you?"
I smirked. "You know me better than that, darling. I don't need any tricks to wipe the floor with you."
"Is that right?" Jax's voice was low, dangerous. The other players glanced between us nervously. Our rivalry was infamous on the circuit.
"That's right," I said evenly. "But don't worry darling, I'll try not to embarrass you too badly in front of Enid."
Jax clenched her jaw. I'd struck another nerve. The dealer cleared their throat, ready to begin play. Jax and I never broke eye contact. The gauntlet had been thrown down. Now it was time to play.
